This is not meant to scare anyone. However I've always liked to know what I'm putting in my mouth is safe. The Florida Department of Health has an on line guide for all spices. The advisory lets you know about the possibility of chemically contaminated fish. It lists fresh and saltwater spices separately, and for specific bodies of water. One that I found interesting was on Sharks all species 43 inches or more a big DO NOT EAT.

If you were to believe this BS that these politicians put out you would think fish was the un-healthiest thing you could put in your body. They dont recommend any fish more than 2 times per week? At least thats what the beef and chicken people tell them to say. Come on, you cant believe these chumps as far as you can throw them. Very few species of saltwater fish contain harmful toxins. I wouldn't eat freshwater fish due to the nasty conditions of our freshwater lakes and ponds but that is another story. P.S. Pufferfish, Blowfish or Toadfish is considered a prized delicacy and while it can kill you if improperly cleaned if you clean it correctly you will enjoy one of the best fish you ever had.

That's interesting because I just saw some generically labeled 'shark' for sale at Publix and it obviously came from a very large shark. I wonder if they're aware of this.

Thanks for the information!

Sorry you felt the article was BS. You've most likely haven't met someone thats got "Ciguatera" poisoning. I have a close friend that went through hell for 5 months before it went into submission. Got it from a 30# groper. As for the puffer, toad and blow fishes, go ahead they're all yours.

Had it , once again oversized grouper. That's not the issue. There are several species on the list that just don't belong on it. As for large grouper I will never eat it from a restraunt again. My case was not nearly as bad as your friends though, a little disoriented for about 2 weeks kinda like they describe vertigo. Sharks are a unique issue. Many of them urinate through their skin and there are large doses of ammonia in the flesh of several larger species. Generally if you stick to Blacktip, Spinner, or Mako ,which happen to be pretty tasty, you shouldn't have any issues.

This information often does scare people but I don't believe the beef and chicken people are behind it, just some overly concerned folks who get paid to be overly concerned. I do believe as an educated Natural Resource Specialist and son of a Marine Biologist that many predatory fish do accumulate heavy metals in there systems and the older they are the more in the system since it does not leave the body once ingested. I still do eat large amounts of fish I just avoid the 30+# Kings and all Barracuda. Sorry, but I am not giving up my Tuna or Cobia!!!
